READINGS AT THE LIBRARY
This last reading of 2016 will be short and sweet.
Sometimes some people say the word sweet instead of
dessert.
What would you like for sweet?
What would you like for dessert?
We will have a taste of a great, traditional Sunday dessert...
sherry trifle, thanks to Juana.
The story is a Christmas story by Paul Auster.
I wouldn't miss either of them for the world .

And to read, an interesting article about modern day Memphis, Tennessee, home to Elvis and B.B. King

COPYRIGHT
HAPPY
BIRTHDAY TO YOU!
Did
you know that this song had a copyright? Not any more.
The
tune was composed by two Kentucky sisters in 1893.
Mildred
and Patty Hill called their version Good Morning To All, which later
evolved into the song that is popularly
sung at birthday parties around the world.
Warner/Chappell
had been collecting copyright fees since 1988 but a decision by Judge
George H. King of United States District Court in Los Angeles, stating
that their copyright is not valid, is a blow to the music publisher
Warner/Chappell and its parent company, the Warner Music Group, which
have controlled the song since 1988 and reportedly still collect some
$2 million annually in licensing fees for it.

on the topic of copyright at our discussion group.

The topic today 30th September is the interesting discovery in Peru of well preserved mummies, a ritual observed by the 'people in the clouds' the Chachapoya . They lived at very high altitudes in Kuelap, Peru. These mummies were covered in beautifully woven colourful cloths.
Ancient Egypt observed similar rituals.
Right now archeologists hope to find the tomb of Nefertiti.
What do these practices tell us about their civilizations?

Autumn in Madrid's Botanic Gardens
Yesterday we enjoyed a guided tour that the Botanic Gardens offer at 12h on Sundays in English and learned for example that there is a good substitute for sugar in a plant called STEVIA, that there is a tomato tree (pictured below)
that our guide's favourite is the árbol de Jupiter which has nice flowers with a beautiful smell and a crazy erratic way of growing and that there exist 30,000 different kinds of roses in the world. The ones in the garden were not in flower.

LAS LECTURAS
The date for June's shared readings has been changed from 16th to today 9th.
We apologise for any inconvenience.
Biblioteca Central 19:15h
Today we will be visiting early twentieth century America again through the works of John Steinbeck.
Those who want to read with us the first chapters of the splendid novel East of Eden just have to join the Reading Group by contacting Raquel in la Biblioteca Central de San Sebastián De Los Reyes or mailing us at the address on the bar above.
It is a great account that explores deep into human nature and our ability to do good and evil. Ultimately Steinbeck reaches a very interesting analysis through Lee, the Chinese character he portrays with great respect.
That is summed up in the translation of the Hebrew Timshel: Thou mayest....triumph over evil.
Totally engrossing, we hope you are encouraged to read the whole book.

Living Wage
- Paying the Living Wage is good for business, good for the individual and good for society.
- The Living Wage is based on the cost of living in each area of the U.K..
On Wednesday at 6.30 p.m. the topic of conversation is the growing poverty in our countries with increasingly more people living on low wages. The Living Wage campaign in Britain is having good effect. It is a campaign to pay workers the Living Wage which is about two pounds more than the minimum wage.
Companies commit to paying the living wage and raise their profile among their customers.
