OSCAR WILDE

Oscar Fingall O Flahertie Wills Wilde was born in Dublin on October 16^th 1854.

He went to Portora Royal School in Enniskillen Northern Ireland.  He was an Irish protestant from an upper class and highly respected family. His mother Jane Francesca Elgee, Lady Wilde, was an Irish patriot even  though her family background was Protestant and conservative. She wrote under the pseudonym of Speranza and as she passed in her carriage people cheered her in the streets of Dublin for her brave defence of Ireland. She was welcomed by 'dreamers and workers' and her son learned from her the impact of the written word.

In 1879 after her husband died, she went to live in London with her two sons Oscar and William.

Oscar studied classics at Trinity College Dublin and Oxford University. He was a master of the English language.

His plays were very successful and he became very famous and moved in the highest society. He spent a year touring America giving conferences.

He married Constance Lloyd and they had two sons Cyril 1885 and Vyvyan in 1886.

His downfall came in 1895 when he was accused and found guilty of homosexual practices and sent to Reading gaol for two years of hard labour.

Oscar went from fame to infamy and suffered the humiliation of imprisonment for homosexuality.

However, the worst punishment that he was to suffer was never to be allowed to see his children again.

Society turned its back on him but his wife Constance wrote to him and even visited him in prison. His mother asked to see him before she died but permission was denied.

He had poor health when he left prison and died in Paris on 30^th November 1900 at the age of 46.

The enchantment of Wilde’s works comes from the rich blend of art and beauty. We are led into the homes of upper class society in his witty plays.

His mother's love of the fairy tales and folklore of Ireland are reflected in his children's stories.

His solid classical education is seen in his poetry.

He shows his empathy with the poor and underclasses in De Profundis and The Ballad from Reading Gaol.

Wilde died in 1900 in Paris and it has taken until today for society to honour him as a writer who dared to show criticism in an age that was uncritical.

By naming the association after Oscar Wilde we raise our hats to this gentle giant. Many of us who have read his works would like to have been the stranger who did just that, the one man among the crowd of people who raised his hat, as Wilde was being escorted to court from the prison cell handcuffed between two policemen, his head bowed.

His father, Sir William Robert Wills Wilde received a knighthood from Queen Victoria for his work in medicine and for his remarkable work on the census of Ireland and its treasures.

His mother Jane Francesca Elgee, Lady Wilde, was an Irish nationalist even though her family background was Protestant and conservative.
She wrote under the pseudonym of Speranza about the folklore of Ireland. People in the streets of Dublin cheered when she passed in her carriage because of her courageous defense of all things Irish.

So Oscar Wilde's parents were very remarkable and extremely talented too.

In our shared readings last year he introduced us to the magical world of his children's stories, to the homes of the élite and to the darkness of prison life.

We enjoyed reading his work firstly because of the beauty of the language but also because he is very clever, very witty, very fresh, very provocative, very funny, very relevant and irreverent.

Also it is worth mentioning his love of beauty, beautiful manners, beautiful objects, beautiful surroundings, physical beauty and natural beauty.

To quote from Lady Windermere's Fan:

'So devoted to sunsets! Shows such refinement of feeling does it not? After all there is nothing like nature, is there?'

His plays became very successful and his fame spread across the Atlantic and he spent a year touring America and giving conferences.

Oscar Wilde’s writing is beautiful, sensitive and deeply Christian. It would be a wonderful destination for all lovers of the English language.

There is another reason why the name of Oscar Wilde is perfect.The name crosses the barriers of race, righteousness and religion. He was born in Dublin. He went to school in Northern Ireland. He was an Irish Protestant from an upperclass and highly respected family.From his mother he learnt to be proud of his Irish heritage and the social impact of literature. He went from fame to infamy and suffered the humiliation of imprisonment in England for his homosexuality. He was a master of the English language and to see, act and perform his plays may seem an impossible task for second language learners but it has been done.

TheTrials of Oscar Wilde

Gross Indecency is the name of the play showing in El Teatro Fernán Gómez in Madrid from 18th September.
It is in Spanish and it deals with the three trials Oscar Wilde had under the accusation of gross indecency. Now that the transcripts of the trial are public it will be interesting to hear Oscar Wilde´s  own defence.

The Story Of How Asociación Educativa Oscar Wilde (ASEDOW) Got Its Name.

   La Asociación Educativa Oscar Wilde (ASEDOW), nació en 2009 como asociación sin ánimo de lucro. El gran escritor Oscar Wilde nos inspiró con la historia de El Gigante Egoísta, un gigante que se negó a permitir que los niños jugaran en su hermoso jardín.
  El objetivo de nuestra asociación, es promover el ideal del aprendizaje permanente y el estudio del idioma de forma relajada, abierto a todos y, para ello, tratar de utilizar espacios públicos que, por alguna razón están infrautilizados.

The name of our association is a tribute to the great writer Oscar Wilde who inspired us with his story The Selfish Giant.
In 2009 this non profit association came into being in order to promote the ideal of lifelong learning  and a relaxed approach to  the study of language, open to all and, with this aim, to access public spaces that for some reason are under used.

On the 11th  at our shared readings we will read 'The Devoted Friend' by Oscar Wilde.
 People well versed in literature are familiar with Oscar Wilde's miller.
It is a well known tale told by animals and as always nature is the beautiful backdrop.  A children's story that fills you with admiration for the writer's ability to gently denounce deep injustices.

Asociación Educativa Oscar Wilde

On February 12th we have our annual meeting.

For ten years Asociación Educativa Oscar Wilde has been a meeting place for people interested in different  aspects of the English language.

We named our association after Oscar Wilde in deference to his humour, his humanity and his genius.

At first we were a virtual  reality... meeting for walks, doing our paperback  book exchanges in the library and  sharing  our love of literature in our shared readings at the library,
We went  on outings to pantomimes and plays.We approached local businesses to sponsor our pub quizzes, local schools to do playground games. It was all about taking the ball and playing with it. The ball being the English language. We also held story writing competitions and were privileged to have the support of the Irish Embassy in Madrid. We published beautiful books with the entries.

Then we were allocated  a room in la Universidad Popular San Sebastián De Los Reyes where we had activities for children and conversations for adults as well as a space for our books and DVD collection.Videos too!

Now we go on walks occasionally and continue to have interesting conversations in our room. It is time to pass on the baton, confident that we address the needs of  people who love languages, in this case English and who just want to be able to it.

Un feliz encuentro

e met the talented musician Carlos Paterson  and his manager Sandra in Madrid on the 12th April. We arranged to meet in Fnac in la Castellana but there was a presentation of Mario Escobar ‘s new book. It was an interesting day as Real Madrid was playing the Champions at the same time so we had a backdrop of rain - soaked terrace bars and chanting fans to contend with but our meeting was productive as it reinforced the idea that ASEDOW can and should act as a go - between for great artists seeking  an audience. We believe that culture and leisure  go hand in hand and will do all we can to get people away from the television and into the theatres and concert venue.

Carlos has composed a beautiful song using poems by Oscar Wilde and Christina Rossetti as  lyrics. This haunting song, interpreted by Daniel Kavanagh, will linger in your memory.

Se trata de una canción recientemente compuesta por Paterson, titulada “If thou wilt, remember”  Consiste en un tema pop-folk de rasgos celtas en el que el compositor ha logrado crear una bella historia intercalando las estrofas de sendos poemas de Oscar Wilde (“Requiescat”) y Christina Rossetti (“When I am dead, my dearest”), literatos tan distintos en su persona como parecidos en su estilo victoriano. Oscar Wilde irlandés, liberal; y Christina Rossetti inglesa, conservadora. Tanto la dirección como la producción del proyecto son suyas y con ello ha querido rendirles un homenaje a tan ilustres literatos.

Carlos Paterson es un compositor español de ascendencia anglosajona que ha logrado aunar con su música en esta obra las culturas irlandesa e inglesa. Su amplia trayectoria musical se mueve tanto en el ámbito de la interpretación, con recitales a piano y órgano en toda Europa, como de la composición. Sus obras han sido interpretadas por grandes músicos como Brenno Ambrosini y Daniel Kavanagh, destacando en su estilo la influencia recibida de su paisano y amigo el compositor de fama internacional Antón García Abril.

El nombre de nuestra asociación es un homenaje al gran escritor Oscar Wilde. Fundada en 2009, para promover el ideal de aprendizaje permanente y un enfoque relajado para el estudio del idioma, la asociación sin fines de lucro está abierta a todos.
Nos reunimos los miércoles a las 6p.m. en la Universidad Popular Avenida Baunatal 18, San Sebastián De Los Reyes, Metro Baunatal para intercambiar y compartir libros y DVDs en inglés de nuestra gran colección y conversar, leer y debatir en inglés, sobre cualquier cosa de interés.

Being a member of ASEDOW is a pleasure. Every week I meet a group of people of different ages to talk on a specific topic, to read a book or to watch a movie which is discussed later. That is good enough for an elder person like me, but, in addition, those activities are conducted in the English language which is a plus for my brain and a good activity for young people.

He acudido de enero a junio los miércoles a esta actividad y ha sido muy agradable y estimulante compartir una tertulia en inglés con personas interesantes, divertidas y con diferentes inquietudes. Nuestros niveles de inglés son diferentes, pero todos hemos participado,... y ¡mejorado! Hemos hablado de temas de actualidad propuestas por los participantes, y de temas culturales que nos motivaban (lecturas, cine, viajes...) Tras el descanso veraniego seguiré acudiendo, sure!

Some background information

Near where I live there’s a lovely little state school with a big playground which  is lying unused, in a state of abandon. When I pass by I always remember Oscar Wilde’s story of The Selfish Giant who would not  let the local children play in his big beautiful garden, even though they had nowhere else to play.

I thought, ‘If the local authorities don’t know what to do with this place I’ll give them an idea.’

Teachers of English in the schools here in Spain are doing a wonderful job and the idea was to offer evening classes to help schoolchildren consolidate their learning and to extend teaching of the English language to reach a greater number of people by offering classes to adults in the morning and late evening.
The teachers would come from any of the many English speaking countries in the world.

The idea was to create a warm learning environment with attractive activities and teaching methods. The beauty of the language class is that it brings children from different schools, different backgrounds together and they are all equal. They could have playground games in English in that wonderful playground.
Families of low income and people who are long term unemployed would be able to bring their children too and come themselves to improve their chances of finding good employment.
To quote a former pupil in a debate about the right of parents to choose and pay for the best education for their children,

‘All children have the right to the best education.’

We cannot underestimate the importance of the ability to communicate in the 'lingua franca' of global research  and the need for young Spanish learners to master English in the contemporary world of increasing internationalization.This school would aim to have high quality teaching open to all because a key E.U. policy is that access to knowledge is a right for everyone and it must be promoted.

Together with my friend and neighbour, Ascen, I approached the local authorities with this proposal. We were told that the school was being used for offices by the local government in Madrid and that before they could do anything with the idea we would have to prove that our interest was not for personal gain but for the community.

Thankfully, my neighbours José and Ascen had the courage and goodwill to join me and form this non profit making association.Together we could get it moving and time will tell if is a good idea and a viable one. Right now we are taking it step by step.

At this stage we are connecting people who are interested in any aspect of the English language. This is a very broad definition but it covers those who have always wanted to learn the language and those who, like myself, have it and want to use it in a social context. We have had shared readings of Oscar Wilde's wonderful plays and stories at the local library already.

We have introduced into the association the idea of bringing together those English speakers who live in the area and would really enjoy a space where they could exchange books, meet people and pursue common interests and those English learners who have invested a lot of time and money in classes but have no opportunity to practise outside the classroom context. A lot of people just need someone to organize the activities for them and that is what we propose to do in ASEDOW. I’m sure our paths can meet.

The lovely thing about this project is that it is not top down.
People are pushing it up.
We are going about this in a happy way. Please don’t come worried about your level of English. Leave your worries at home.
Relax and enjoy the activities that are coming up.

Hopefully these activities will lead us back eventually to the original idea of

A SUMMER TRIP TO THE UK AND IRELAND 2012 by Eduardo, EOI Sanse

UN VIAJE POR UK E IRLANDA EN EL VERANO DE 2012

Este año decidimos mi hijo y yo hacer un viaje mitad turístico, mitad para mejorar nuestro inglés.

This year my son and I decided to do a bit of tourism and improve our English.

La primera etapa fue en Gran Bretaña y el punto de entrada fue Stansted. Esta pequeña localidad nos sirvió como lugar para asentarnos y durante los tres días que estuvimos en Reino Unido , poder visitar Londres y Cambridge.

The first stage of our trip was Stansted airport, GB. We stayed in this area and from there visited London and Cambridge during our three day stay.

Unas buenas comunicaciones desde el hotel al pequeño aeropuerto, la buena red de autobuses y el tren, nos permitió podernos mover con total autonomía.

The hotel and airport were well communicated and the good bus and train service meant we could move around very easily.

En Londres visitamos todos los puntos de interés de una visita a la capital Británica, contando además con unos magníficos días de buen tiempo.

In London we visited all the places of interest and had wonderful weather to do so.

Con estos días de sol, preferimos ver Londres paseando por sus calles, disfrutar del corto verano y curiosear todos sus rincones. Esta vez nada de museos o lugares cerrados.

The weather was too good to spend time indoors in museums so we walked around exploring every little corner.

Sus calles como Oxford Street, Qeen Victoria, Piccadilly estaban llenas de actividad y sus plazas a reventar de turistas. Los edificios más emblemáticos animaban a verlos con detenimiento.

Streets such as Oxford Street , Queen Victoria and Picadilly were choc a bloc with people, things to do and tourists. We wandered around studying the most emblematic buildings of the city.

Además estaban los preparativos de las Olimpiadas que fue otro motivo para descubrir curiosidades.

Also, we were there just before the Olympic Games and so saw the preparatory work which was really interesting.

Nuestra visita a Cambridge era para disfrutar de la tranquilidad de sus calles centenarias y respirar el clima de estudio de esa pequeña ciudad.

Our visit to Cambridge was spent enjoying the quiet streets and breathing in the atmosphere of study in this centenary university town.

Coincidiendo con la finalización del curso en Cambridge, tuvimos la oportunidad de contemplar la graduación de sus alumnos y callejear por sus calles de gran encanto.

We were able to see the students graduate as our visit coincided with the end of the university year. Absolutely charming.

Los museos, os los recomendamos no os los podéis perder, así como entrar y pasear por sus ancestrales Colegios.

If you go to Cambridge make sure you visit its museums and take a walk inside the ancient university.

Fueron unos días intensos pero esto, solo era la escala para llegar a Dublín donde teníamos pensado estar las próximas dos semanas.

Three very intense days but they were just a prelude to our two week trip to Dublin.

La llegada a la capital de Irlanda en avión, hace pensar en una ciudad mayor de lo que realmente es. Pasados unos días, la conocíamos mejor que a la propia Madrid.

Arriving into Dublin by plane you think the city is bigger than it actually is. Soon we would know it better than Madrid.

Decidimos instalarlos en una familia. Además de lo cordiales que son los irlandeses, tuvimos la suerte de estar estas dos semanas en la casa de John. Un entrañable y familiar irlandés. No hubo noche, que no nos diera la madrugada hablando de cualquier tema.

We were staying with a family. Irish people are good natured on the whole and we had the immense pleasure of staying in John's house for two weeks. A memorably kind, friendly Irishman. Not a night went by that we wouldn't be sitting up talking until the small hours.

Durante la semana teníamos un curso intensivo en Dublín pero eso no quitaba para que visitáramos sus museos, recorriéramos sus calles o disfrutáramos del encanto de sus exuberantes jardines.

During the week we had to do our crash course in English but still, we managed to visit Dublin's museums, explore its streets and savour its beautiful, exuberant parks and gardens.

La compra de libros en su versión original como The Picture of Dorian Gray de Oscar Wilde o Dubliners de James Joyce, era casi una obligación. Así como visitar sus esculturas una, la de Wilde en Merrion Square y la de James en O´Connell Street.

I was compelled to buy these books in the original English version....The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde and Dubliners by James Joyce. Another must do was to see the statue of Wilde in Merrion Square and one of James Joyce in Dublin's main thoroughfare, O' Connell Street.

La visita a sus Pubs, es una obligación y cuando crees que ya conoces todo sobre cervezas lo mejor una visita a Guinness Storehouse.

Visits to the pubs are also compulsory when you are in Dublin. When you think you know all there is to know about beer and ale then you have to go to The Guinness Storehouse.

Los fines de semana eran para alejarnos de la ciudad y visitar sus pequeños pueblos, sus granjas, sus castillos y los centros de interés como los Cliffs of Moher o Glendaloch.

Weekends were spent getting away from the city and so we went to villages, farms, castles, the Cliffs of Moher and Glendalough the ancient Celtic Christian settlement.

Sobre el curso, nos fue muy bien y además de probar el examen final, conocimos a personas que como nosotros juntaban sus vacaciones con el turismo.

As for the couse, it went really well and we passed our exams. We got to know others who were combining tourism and language learning just like us.

En estos viajes, si nos proponemos en salirnos del turismo convencional de hotel y restaurante podemos traernos un pedacito de estos países y sus gentes con nosotros además de hablar y compartir experiencias.

On trips like this if you make the effort to get away from the typical tourist hotels and restaurants you can bring back a piece of the country and people you visit through the conversations and experiences shared.

El año próximo volveremos a preparar algo parecido seguramente, porque nos salió muy bien en todos los sentidos

Next year my son and I will do another trip because this one turned out so well in every sense.

Coming Up

THE ORIGINAL UNABRIDGED OSCAR WILDE

Very soon, on the 21st February at 19.30h in La Biblioteca Central San Sebastián de los Reyes we will have shared readings of works by Oscar Wilde.
This time we will be reading his most famous children's story The Happy Prince. It is a good choice because it shows another less known side to Wilde who always seems to be portrayed as outrageous and frivolous. He had a social conscience too and these stories really pull at your heartstrings.

Una luz se apaga

We deeply regret the loss of a dear friend and  the wife of our vice president José.
Rosa passed away on May  4^th 2020.

When we started out on this venture we were very lucky that our families tolerated our different escapades and even joined us at the occasional pub quiz and on the occasional walk, as Rosa did.

It seems that we Irish share a common bond of not taking life too seriously with our friends from Galicia.
We will miss you, Rosa.
May you rest in peace.

Lecturas Compartidas de Literatura en Inglés

La actividad comenzó en enero de 2012. Desde entonces, nos hemos estado reuniendo una vez al mes, de 19:15 a 21:00 en la Biblioteca Central. Se trata de una actividad coordinada entre la Asociación Educativa Oscar Wilde (www.asedow.blogspot.com) y la Biblioteca Central, San Sebastián De Los Reyes.

Durante el primer año leímos las obras de Oscar Wilde, pero después hemos estado leyendo obras de otros autores, en concreto relatos cortos que nos permiten hacer una lectura completa sobre la que poder opinar después. Una o dos semanas antes de la reunión, se comunica por correo electrónico a los asistentes cuál es el relato elegido y durante la reunión, lo leemos en voz alta, por turnos. Después de la lectura, se intercambian opiniones sobre lo que nos ha sugerido la lectura, lo que consideramos interesante, acertado o desacertado.

La próxima reunión será el martes 17 de marzo, que coincide con la festividad de San Patricio, y al ser ASEDOW una asociación muy vinculada con Irlanda, ese día vamos a salirnos del guión y vamos a hacer algo diferente. Para ese día, tenemos que traer algo que hayamos escrito nosotros, puede estar relacionado con cualquier tema, no hay nada establecido; ni si el escrito tiene que ser en primera o tercera persona…todo vale. Se trata de cambiar un poco la dinámica de la sesión.

En abril retomaremos las lecturas de los autores que hemos seleccionado para este año: Charles Dickens, Mark Twain (de los cuales ya leímos relatos), Jane Austen, Emily Brontë o John Steinbeck.

Well, having explained to the audience why our association is named after Oscar Wilde, we proceeded to read together a short story and so commenced the shared readings.

We are very happy with the participation of the audience who took turns to read and sought answers to their queries, shared ideas and showed enthusiasm about this endeavour.

Raquel on behalf of the library, pointed out the value of the activity that combines English language and English literature and which people can enjoy in a relaxing way.

Ascen gave a clear and concise outline in Spanish about ASEDOW's past and present.

Now we need to start planning its future.

We are making good progress and meeting interesting people.

Bueno, después de explicar a los espectatadores la razón por la que pusimos el nombre de Oscar Wilde a nuestra asociación, procedimos a leer juntos uno de sus cuentos cortos y de esta manera empezamos nuestras lecturas compartidas.

Estamos muy contentos con la participación del público que se turnaron para leer, solicitaron respuestas a sus preguntas, compartieron ideas y mostraron entusiasmo con esta prueba.

Raquel,( hablando en inglés impecable ) de parte de la Bibloteca Central, señaló el valor de una actividad que combina el idioma y la literatura inglesa, una actividad que puede disfrutar la gente de forma relajada.

Ascen explicó de forma clara y concisa el pasado y presente de ASEDOW. Ahora necesitamos empezar a planificar su futuro. Estamos haciendo buenos progresos y conociendo a gente interesante.

Of course the best event of all is our relaxed talking group where you can meet people from different walks of life who get together and use whatever English they have just to talk about everything under the sun.

You can see this map in Enniskillen in a local railway museum collection. 

It shows the train routes of different pupils who attended the same school there as Oscar Wilde.

VERY INTERESTING EVENT

We now have some copies of The Collected Works of Oscar Wilde.

This means that a joint initiative between ASEDOW and La Bibloteca Central of San Sebastán de los Reyes to do shared readings of his literature can go ahead.

Many of you have invested a lot of time and money in learning English. It is a natural step forward to start enjoying English literature and your guide will be Oscar Wilde. He will take you by the hand and introduce you to the magical world of his children's stories, to the homes of the élite and to the darkness of prison life.

Come to the presentation to learn more if you think you would like to sign up.

This will be on the 17th January at 19h30 in la Biblioteca Central, San Sebastián de los Reyes.
