20th December at the U.P.

WRITERS WRITE
On the last Wednesday of our talking group and in true Spanish style we had a little fiesta.

We were very happy to welcome Sofía, who came to pick up her prize as winner of ASEDOW story Competition 2016 Junior Category.
Here you can see her with her mother and members of ASEDOW
Welcome guests

ASEDOW crosses generations and cultures using  the English language to bring people together and have fun.
Juana is also a writer and our oldest member she tells us. She is the vital spark in our association and learned to love  English when she lived in England with her husband Rafa in the seventies.
2016 Wilde writers
Sofia lives in Sanse and goes to Greenwich School in Alcobendas. She has also lived in England: We loved her story about the beginning of the wizarding world which won this year's competition.
Well done Sofía! We don't know if we were  impressed more by your story or your reading of it. Bravo!
Sofia collects her gift voucher, certificate and booklet
!t was lovely to meet  the writers who took the time to enter our competition and we certainly encourage all of you to follow your creative impulse. 'A true artist takes no notice of the public. The public to him are non existent.' Oscar Wilde
We hope to meet participants Monica and Adriana too one day.
'Eternally in love with love' by Monica got a special mention from one juror as did 'An Exciting day' by Valentina.

The jurors had a most difficult task. Paul and Katie, we can never thank you enough.

Merry Christmas! Joyous Yuletide!

WIZARDS AND WATER WIN WILDE WRITING AWARD

It is a pleasure and honour to count on the support of the Irish Embassy in Madrid and that Ann Marie, their Cultural Attaché, found the time in a very busy schedule and time of year  to be there to congratulate the winners and hand out the prizes along with the booklets and diplomas to all the participants. We are so grateful for that and for her warm speech.

We were delighted to welcome back Iván who entered the contest for the third time and is now making his way as an actor and to meet new writers like Javier whose own stories will be published soon in Spanish.

There is nothing like Irish music to lighten the spirits so with the background music of 'Breaking Trad,' we eased the tension before announcing the winners

Ángel read his winning story with its poignant ending and later told us how interesting he found the challenge. Inside the booklet there are words from Katie, commending this year's two winners, Ángel for The Path of Life and Sofía for  The Beginning of the Wizarding World.

We hope the other participants who attended the event enjoyed it too.

We were also accompanied by María Jesús, the director of the library and by Raquel, a member of its staff  who has been vital in the instigation of our monthly readings in la Biblioteca Central.

In such company we felt very happy and wish to thank all of you who attended for being there and sharing this moment.
We also had a visit from the local TV station Canal Norte and they recorded some words from our wonderful Secretary, Ascen. A bad bout of flu kept Belén, our Councillor for Education  away but she spoke to Ascen and sent us good wishes.

José designed the beautiful booklet but couldn't be there because he is at this moment in Plaza España where he has a stall in the Christmas Artisan's Fair selling his special jewellery.

A word of thanks to the new company Mi Color Favorito for printing the books so well.

Talks

We have something to think about. Luis poses an  interesting question:

What are prisons for - to punish or to reform?

And a point of view to discuss:

'Prisons don't work'

This issue is relevant in all societies as we can see from the links we have to look at beforehand.

Wetlands in Madrid

Misty morning

On Saturday  Alejandra accompanied us on a guided tour of these lakes in Velilla San Antonio and pointed out the features of this curious place . She knows it very well and knew where to stop to see all the birds that have made it their home. So we saw the purple gallinule, the shy calamon, many little black ducks to me but she told us that they are pochards, the gadwall and the great cormorant stretching its wings to dry them, in the trees. What a picture!
The vegetation is quite typical here in Spain . White and black poplar, elms and newly planted white willows.  There are tamarisk bushes and spartograss which  can be used to make espadrilles. We learnt that 'junco' is rush and that 'caña' is cane and that 'mimbre' comes from willow trees.

Then the sun came out

You definitely need your binoculars because this is where you can see the magnificent falcon,,woodpeckers and the bee eater in spring and summer.
It is a haven for them. Many people go there to fish on condition that they return their catch. When you are alone it must be very serene with the calm waters and the birds singing as happily as can be.

A guided tour is a good idea as you could easily get lost.and the lakes cover an incredible area so contact Centro de Campillo

This week's topic

HABITS

How we make them and how we break them.

Not only we as individuals are interested in this topic but as our links show, market research is discovering a lot about our habits and pre-empting us.
Luis has sent us some very interesting links on the topic. If you want to join our talks you will find us here in San Sebastián De Los Reyes:

A stunning performance

AUDREY WRITES:

On a mid November Saturday afternoon, a group of members of ASEDOW gathered to attend a production by English Theatre Madrid of William Shakespeare's famous play, Romeo and Juliet.

The play was set in much more modern times, 1980's Britain, than the original which allowed the costume department to dress some of the actresses in "power shoulders", reflecting the women's fashion trend of that epoch of wearing shoulder pads sewn into blouses, jackets and coats.

Nobody wore this fashion better than the late Margaret Thatcher, whose authoritative persona was chosen to replace the Prince in the original version. Her portrait was centre stage throughout the play, together with two placards, one to the left and one to the right, representing the British Labour and Conservative parties respectively to depict the rivalry between the two families.

The tragic theme of the play was given a dash of levity thanks to a brilliant interpretation by the actors of a script which remained true to the original old English while adding a touch of modernity and poetry to several of the lines.

It was further enlivened by the inclusion of some 1980's pop music, either recorded or sung live, which served to complement the action on stage, most memorably in a superbly choreographed scene, featuring part of Michael Jackson's "Thriller", which caused the audience to break into spontaneous applause. However, the loudest acclamation came at the end of the play in tribute to a highly talented cast who provided a most entertaining and enjoyable performance of Shakespeare's timeless classic.

Our talks

In line with the virtual visit to London town below, is the topic for this week's talking group.
Identity.
How much of your cultural identity do you lose when you settle down in another country?  It is a burning issue nowadays whether integration means losing your cultural identity or whether host cities and countries  benefit from cultural diversity.

If  we have enough people we can enjoy a weekend trip to San Sebastián/ Donostia in the Basque country.
Please share the poster below with your friends and take this great opportunity to visit  the 2016 European Capital of Culture.
After the pintxos there will be an optional guided tour of the city.

A healthy debate

Isn't it better for rules to be agreed on together? For  example the burka ban or burkini ban.
When police were asked to enforce a local law on the beach in Cannes in the south of France this summer, the pictures went viral and raised many more issues.

Would you like to contrast your opinions with us. Come to our talks at the Universidad Popular on Wednesday 18:30h.

Story telling

Local actress Eileen O' Higgins  told us about her role
in the film Brooklyn
SOMA festival is different for everyone and we started the festivities by tasting a locally made cider called Kilmegan and watching the film Brooklyn at Maginn's bar.It was very nice, On Saturday there was the Lisa Hannigan concert. I didn't think I would really enjoy a concert in a church but my goodness the accoustics are brilliant. She was fabulous. The music a dream. Sean's Walk sounded really good there too.

The fabulous Lisa Hannigan

We also managed to go on the half day tour visiting Strangford area of Winterfell from the Game of thrones that left from King's Inn as announced on the SOMA webpage. We were so glad we went and learnt so much.

Dire Wolf Tours with William jr and William sr owners of Greywind and Summer
 with Biddy ,Suzie,Angélica,Noelia and Patricia

What else? There was so much more...the bi lingual Irish/English early morning walk for bird lovers,

Bi lingual bird walk with Pól and Micky Ciara and Suzie,

Special visits for attendees of the Sheehy Skeffington language school to the castle and the arboretum.
Castle tour with Andrew
Elizabeth, Ana Sofía Angélica and  Noelia at the castle gates

Arboretum tour with Robert

We really must tell the Japanese about it. They would love the gardens and English language classes. Our pupils this year were from Columbia and Poland and like everyone else we know who attended the festival...we all want to come back next year!
Unfortunately Mirek, Angelika and Arak from Poland  couldn't come with us on the outings but Noelia from Spain did.

We were given a warm welcome by the inter church choir where I unexpectedly and very happily met old friends and new and we joined them and then enjoyed the amazing gospel singers from Dublin on Sunday. It was lovely to be back in my hometown.
Angélica from Columbia and Josephine Olivia from the U.S. join the Interchurch choir
Mary, thanks for asking me to help start the language school.
Elizabeth, Ana Sofía, Mary and Angélica outside a lovely shopfront.

Biddy getting ready for the firat class

It is a brilliant initiative. Congratulations SOMA for a wonderful festival!
Mary and Tiona finally get to have a rest

Last but not least the intriguing name Sheehy Skeffington. Where did it come from? Many of us have only learned about this unsung local hero now and can only be happy to recover the memory of this linguist and pacifist.  The discovery also led us to the area of cultural tourism that SOMA wants to promote with talks and debates because of our own peculiar history.
Announcing the first award winner at Kings' Inn
SOMA 2016 launched an award for social justice through the promotion of peace and respect for all cultures. The first ever prize went to Castlewellan Community Action Group, founders and volunteers who have saved our local primary school and turned it into a community centre for all kinds of fun learning activities for young and old in both Irish and English.
The old primary school
Well done!!!  We had the pleasure of the presence of the grand - daughter of the Sheehy Skeffingtons who works in U.C.G. and who was delighted with Mary’s invitation to be at Kings’ Inn on Saturday 16th July. With fascinating footage we relived the struggle for freedom and votes for women in early 20th century Ireland and that the battle for equal rights continues today.

5 Secrets to unbeaten paths of Northern Ireland by Patricia Muñoz King
