The Digital Press

TALKS

Look at what Oscar Wilde said about the press in his day:

'It was a fatal day when the public discovered that the pen is mightier than the paving stone, and can be made as offensive as a brickbat. They at once sought for the journalist, found him, developed him, and made him their industrious well paid servant. In the old days men had the rack. Now they have the press.'

The rack is a form of torture. Evidently Mr Wilde was not impressed by the journalists in his day.
The popular press, the tabloids in Britain and the opinion columns in Spain sometimes give us the news from their point of view.... when we just want to read the news.

What is the job of the journalist?
Is their job to sell newspapers?
Are reporters reporting everything?
Is reporting unbiassed?
Are you happy with the press?
Have things improved with the digital press?

The Moon And Sixpence

'To my mind the most interesting thing in art is the personality of the artist; and if that is singular, I am willing to excuse a thousand faults. I suppose Velasquez was a better painter than El Greco, but custom stales one's admiration for him: the Cretan, sensual and tragic, proffers the mystery of his soul like a standing sacrifice'

William Somerset Maugham

Opening chapters of The Moon And Sixpence

A popular British writer of the twentieth century and magnificent story teller.. We will be reading the first chapters of The Moon And Sixpence by Somerset Maugham. This  novel is loosely based  on the life of French artist Paul Gauguin.

Isn't it wonderful when Art and Literature converge?  What draws you more, Gauguin's paintings or to explore the artist's unconventional life only the way a writer can?

Join us on June 6th Biblioteca Central San Sebastián De Los Reyes at 19:15h.
This is our last reading for 2017

SOLIDARITY WITH MANCHESTER

Every parent's worst nightmare. And it's not that we feel their pain more than the pain of other parents who suffer the loss of a child but brutality will never win.

TALKING POINT

WHAT YOUR LUNCH SAYS ABOUT YOU

Audrey has sent us this suggestion for our Wednesday talks this week.

So what do we all have for lunch?
And as we are on the subject of food, let's talk about PALM OIL too. The ubiquitous palm oil.

How much time do we take in a lunch break? 🕑

And one of the questions that puzzles foreigners:
Why is the lunch break so long in Spain all year round?

We have a very interesting link to view before our talk which you can receive by writing to us at asedow@gmail.com

Join us on May 24th at 18:30h  Universidad Popular and tell us your answers! 😊

AT THE LIBRARY

One of the first things we did when we received funding for our activities was to buy
copies of  The Collected Works of Oscar Wilde for our association.
Tuesday 9th May at 19:15h we will be using our books to read one of his short stories.

The Nightingale And The Rose

Jane Anne has suggested complementing it with a story by another great author, Hans Christian Andersen and to  read The Nightingale. Brilliant idea.

TALKING POINT FOR MAY 10th

This is quite controversial but it also deals with the loneliness displaced people feel and how important it is for them to be with people from their own culture too. 'Otherwise you isolate people and a kind of sub culture developes,' the article says.

We also came across another article that is relevant to the debate as it perhaps helps explain the attraction between people who are worlds apart.

As Juarez a Mexican President once said, 'There will be no peace until we respect other cultures.' Read the articles and come and tell us what you think.
