Summer Reading

Members are welcome to borrow and exchange paperbacks.
We have a nice collection. We even have The Moon and Sixpence.
We read the opening chapters even though they were pretty difficult.
Well done all of you! That title comes from another story by Somerset Maugham suggesting that  people are so preoccupied looking down for sixpence  ( a little silver coin now out of use) that they don't look up to see the moon.

The room will be open tomorrow 15th June at 19h.

Look at what Oscar Wilde said about the press in his day:

'It was a fatal day when the public discovered that the pen is mightier than the paving stone, and can be made as offensive as a brickbat. They at once sought for the journalist, found him, developed him, and made him their industrious well paid servant. In the old days men had the rack. Now they have the press.'

The rack is a form of torture. Evidently Mr Wilde was not impressed by the journalists in his day.
The popular press, the tabloids in Britain and the opinion columns in Spain sometimes give us the news from their point of view.... when we just want to read the news.

What is the job of the journalist?
Is their job to sell newspapers?
Are reporters reporting everything?
Is reporting unbiassed?
Are you happy with the press?

Opening chapters of The Moon And Sixpence

A popular British writer of the twentieth century and magnificent story teller.. We will be reading the first chapters of The Moon And Sixpence by Somerset Maugham. This  novel is loosely based  on the life of French artist Paul Gauguin.

Isn't it wonderful when Art and Literature converge?  What draws you more, Gauguin's paintings or to explore the artist's unconventional life only the way a writer can?
