First, mention how impressed we were with the prizewinners, Marta, Eva and Ainoa, who read their stories with such aplomb for the audience.

18th June

Spanish Irish Business Network organised a very nice picnic to celebrate Bloomsday in the Retiro Park and to raise money for Lorca on Saturday morning. The Patron of Lorca is St Patrick so the picnic was a good occasion to contribute to the Spanish Red Cross Earthquake Appeal.

Bloomsday is an annual commemoration held every 16th June to celebrate the life of Irish writer James Joyce and relive episodes of his novel Ulysses.

17th June

A wonderful celebration of James Joyce's Ulysses in words and music held in the Centro Gallego on the previous evening raised money for the charity Luces Rojas in India too.

Premios del concurso de cuentos

Ahí dejo unas fotos del acto de entrega de premios del concurso WRITE A STORY AND WIN A PRIZE (2nd EDITION), que se celebró el viernes pasado en la Biblioteca Central de San Sebastián de los Reyes.

El acto fué presidido por Brigid King, Ascensión Bartolomé (presidenta y secretaria de ASEDOW, respectivamente) y por la presidenta de nuestro jurado irlandés Dra. Frances King.

Una vez entregados los premios, se repartieron los libros con los cuentos de esta edición entre los asistentes y, los ganadores, nos leyeron sus relatos para todos.

Nuestro agradecimiento al personal de la Biblioteca Central por cedernos el espacio y darnos todo tipo de facilidades; a los participantes, porque sin ellos esto no sería posible; a todos los asistentes y a Melanie, por su traducción simultánea.

The lucky winners receive gift vouchers from Fnac worth 25E and the group effort will receive cinema tickets. All the participants receive a booklet of their stories in print plus the original story of The Happy Prince, one of Oscar Wilde's most popular children's stories.

Thank you to all who collaborated... the library, the children and the associates.

Do you like literature?

In September there will be Literature classes on Tuesday evenings to study in depth Wilde's poetry and writings - only if we have enough people interested.

We are very happy with the outcome. We exchanged lots of books. There is plenty of good reading and for any of you who would like to keep in contact, maybe we will see you on Thursday 2nd June at 8p.m. in the café of La Casa de la Juventud for our Thursday get together.

Estos son los resultados del jurado irlandés

Resultado Junior
Fue difícil llegar a una decisión ya que nos gustaban todos los cuentos porque eran imaginativos y emocionantes. Al final tuvimos que elegir un cuento y decidimos que Ainoa Quirce - con sólo diez años - debería ser la ganadora porque contó su cuento muy claramente y terminó muy felizmente. También destacamos la historia de Maria López Dominguez, porque describe tan bien a su príncipe y princesa que casi podíamos dibujarles.

Resultado Grupo
También era difícil elegir un ganador porque se notaba que los grupos se habían esforzado en crear su cuento. Decidimos elegir el cuento de Miguel, Marta y Cristina porque estaba lleno de aventuras en distintos países. Haría una gran película.

Resultado Senior
Todos acordamos que el premio tendría que ser para Eva Rodriguez Bartolomé por su cuento de The Happy Prince porque era original a la vez que gracioso.

Nuestra enhorabuena a todos los participantes. Nos impresionó mucho su inglés y la originalidad de los cuentos.

Nuestras felicitaciones también para Asociación Educativa Oscar Wilde por animar lazos culturales entre Irlanda y España.

Here are the results from the Irish jury

Result for Juniors
This was a difficult category to judge because we liked all the stories and thought they were very imaginative and exciting. In the end we had to choose one story and agreed that Ainoa Quirce - aged just ten - should be the winner because she told a story very clearly and it ended very happily. We also highly commend the story by Maria Lopez Dominguez because she describes her prince and princess so well that we could almost draw a picture of them.

Result for the Group Effort
Again it was difficult to choose a winner because it was clear that the groups had put a lot of effort into their stories. We decided to pick the story by Miguel, Marta and Cristina because it was full of adventures in different countries. It would make a very exciting movie.

Result for Seniors
We are all agreed that the award should go to Eva Rodriguez Bartolome for her story The Happy Prince which is both original and funny.

Our congratulations go to all who entered the competition. We were very impressed by the standard of English and the originality of the stories.

Well done also the Asociacion Educativa Oscar Wilde for encouraging the cultural and literary links between Ireland and Spain.

We will announce the winners here on the 8th May and the winners can collect their prizes in La Biblioteca Central on Saturday the 14th May. (Pending confirmation)

We hope to have the booklet ready for all the participants then too.

JUJIJO in SANSE

Yesterday at I.E.S. Joan Miró the students were enthralled as they watched two live performances in English of Shakespeare's Tempest and Macbeth. You think that is impossible? Not with the interpretations of Julie, Jim and Jonathan. The total absorption of the audience was theatre at its best and most magical. What a gift.
